Matching grant for Community Education

Ridgefield School District has an award-winning Community Education program with an extensive year-round calendar of courses and activities for people of all ages. Thanks to a $2,000 matching grant from the Ridgefield Lions Club, Community Education is fundraising through June 10 to provide scholarships for students and families in need.

Community Education offers a diverse range of programs, including Ridgefield Youth Arts Month, summer camps, before and after school classes, and community sports. While prices are kept at reasonable rates, the cost can be a barrier to participation.

In an effort to make Community Education a more inclusive, welcoming opportunity for all children, the Lions Club has awarded the Ridgefield School District a generous grant, matching all donations up to $2,000 through June 10 to create a Community Education scholarship fund.

With courses that range from LEGO construction to basketball, from watercolor to cooking, the classes offer students the chance to try new things in a fun and supportive environment. Sports leagues give students the chance to learn and compete outside of school teams. The summer camps and before and after school programs are more than just enrichment for kids, they can also be a lifeline for working parents.

The first scholarships will cover a portion of the cost of enrolling in this year’s summer camps, allowing more students to take part in the exciting, full-day activities. Community Education director Terri Cochran said, “We want to see more students coming to summer camps because of these scholarships. But if we can raise enough, we want to keep the scholarships going beyond that, for the courses and activities that kids love.”
