WHY TENNIS?

High school athletics offers important developmental experiences that the classroom cannot offer. Tennis in particular puts young adults into many situations they may not have encountered in other walks of life.

  • ā€‹Tennis is played head-to-head.

  • Tennis players officiate their own matches.

  • Tennis places an emphasis on sportsmanship and court etiquette.

  • Tennis scoring makes it possible to mount a comeback no matter how far down you are.

  • Tennis players make hundreds of split second decisions.

It is a sport that many people choose to play for a lifetime because there is always something new to learn from each situation and each opponent.  We are a competitive team working toward winning , but never at the expense of our core principles which are Sportsmanship, Teamwork, Excellence and Perseverance.

NO CUTS

We are proud to be one of Ridgefield's few no-cut sports. In fact, all girls tennis in the league is no-cut, and most girls tennis nationwide is no-cut, making it the fifth largest high school sport overall by number of athletes participating.

No-cut school tennis teams allow students of all abilities to join a team representing their school and be physically active. This opportunity helps create well-rounded student-athletes, develops leadership and teaches responsibility.

HOW HIGH SCHOOL TENNIS WORKS

MATCH TENNIS

Varsity matches consist of 6 events (3 singles and 3 doubles) using 9 different players. Varsity matches are best 2 of 3 sets (to 6) with ad scoring. A 7 point tie break is played if the set score is tied 6-6.

JV matches consist of consist of 6 events (3 singles and 3 doubles) using 9 different players. JV matches are a single pro set. A pro set is first to 8 games (win by 2). A 7-point tie-break is played if the score reaches 8ā€“8.

The winner of the matches between school is based on how many of the 6 events each school wins. In the event of a 3-3 tie, the school with more sets won is the winner. If the schools are tied on sets, the winner is the school with more games won.

RULES

High school matches follow USTA (US Tennis Association) rules. Because players will officiate their own matches, they should know the rules of the game. Download the complete rulebook called Friend at Court PDF

EQUIPMENT

Equipment needs for tennis are very small. Players should have a tennis racket, suitable shoes and practice clothes. Players are also responsible for maintaining their tennis racket by replacing the strings and grip as needed.
